IndexNow key generator

Creates a random 32-character key with your browser's cryptographic random generator and gives you the file to host. Nothing is sent to our servers.

Protocol facts last checked 2026-09-24.

Generate a key

Only used to show the exact key file URL.

Host the key file

The protocol accepts keys of 8 to 128 characters from a-z, A-Z, 0-9 and the dash (-). The key file is named <key>.txt and lives at the root of the host you submit URLs for; alternatively you can pass any .txt path on the same host as keyLocation, which then limits the key to URLs under that path. The file contains only the key and should be served as text/plain.

Where the root directory is on your platform differs; the integration guides in the sidebar cover Cloudflare, WordPress, Shopify, Webflow and Next.js.

Check it is live

Open the file URL in a browser: you should see the bare key. Then run the key checker, which also confirms there is no redirect to another host and no extra content.

Rotating a key

Keys are public by design (anyone can read the file), so rotation is about hygiene, not secrecy. Publish the new file, switch the key in whatever submits for you, then delete the old file. Endpoints validate the key on each request, so there is no registration step.
